A birth chart can be read an infinite number of times, with ever-deepening awareness and insight to guide the soul. A skilled professional astrologer unlocks this sacred text for the benefit of their client, over and over again. There is the ability to read the chart, and then there is the art of reading that chart for that client in that particular moment in time—this is what makes a masterful astrologer.

Beyond the mechanics of chart reading and a deep understanding of the combinations, how do you read for anyone, anywhere, at any time? How do you meet the client where they’re at, and help them step more fully onto their life’s path, more authentically become themselves, no matter what? If they trigger you, how do you still speak from that place as medicine to them, without being self-centered? How do you still help them to enter more intimately into their relationships? No matter who you are and no matter what your approach, the client will come along who pushes your buttons, urging you beyond yourself. Can you speak beyond tropical & sidereal, beyond miracles & skepticism, beyond Red and Blue, beyond ideology? For beyond ideology is the embodied practice of showing up for life, and trying to be a good and supportive person the best you know how.

Through three live readings, I will demonstrate three different ways to read a chart: (1) The systematic approach, which is the foundation for all readings, interprets the sun, moon, rising, major aspects & angles, etc. in a stepwise fashion (2) The therapeutic approach combines the systematic with relational and felt knowing—the messages given to you by deeply listening to the client and hearing the archetypes speak through them (3) The divinatory or oracular approach is reserved for the advanced astrologer—it engages intuitive and even psychic capacities as a channel, drawing from dream, reverie, environmental cues, and the chart of the moment. Each of these ways to read are their own set of skills that, when combined, create a powerful reading that can change the course of someone’s life—both how they see themself and the decisions that they make.

In this masterclass, I will teach each of these three skills and then integrate them together for you to witness and internalize for your own practice. In the live demos, I will share with you my step-by-step process and analysis of the birth chart and personal transits, as well as my understanding of the client and the intersubjective field of our relationship (synastry), plus the moment the reading takes place (world transits + transits to the client’s chart and to our synastry).

I will demonstrate how to:

• Read the birth chart in three different ways: (1) systematic (2) therapeutic (3) divinatory, and analyze this process with time for questions
• Prepare for and read the birth chart, personal transits, and subsidiary charts
• Skillfully and accurately correlate meaning between the chart and your client’s life
• Perceive the order of significance and what to focus on while reading (and what not to focus on)
• Work with different types of clients and different types of charts
• Listen and speak symbolically and archetypally
• Begin and end a reading
• Integrate post-reading
• Create confidential, therapeutic, safe, and sacred space
• Use clear language so your client understands your interpretations and can apply them to their life
• Frame a reading
• Be professional and have clear boundaries to protect both you and your client
• Answer challenging questions from your client
• Hold yourself and your client with compassion, care, understanding, and non-defensiveness
• Facilitate ongoing readings
• Promote your work effectively

Reading a birth chart is reading both a sacred text and a person’s soul. Within the counseling space of astrology, it is essential that we know how to read both—the chart and the person before us. This is how astrological and psychological knowledge work together to translate the meaning of the celestial symbols into the meaning of a client’s life and psyche. The skillful counseling astrologer embodies this with mindful compassion, loving kindness, and humanistic care—always asking themselves, “how do I use the symbols and language of psyche to empower my clients to live their lives with courage and compassion?”
