How does the world relate to the divine? Plato proposes the doctrine of participation to describe this complex relationship in which divinity is both a part of the world and yet apart from it. Participation gives rise to philosophical problems and enigmas that are only fully resolved in the course of a 1200-year evolution culminating in the work of Maximus the Confessor. Travis will trace this history of ideas and then explore how the participatory relationship with the divine may serve as a template for our relationships with each other.

In this talk Chris Bache will share some of the boundaries crossed and the lessons learned in his 20-year psychedelic journey reported in his forthcoming book LSD and the Mind of the Universe (November, 2019). 73 high dose LSD sessions conducted between 1979-1999 became the philosophical adventure of a lifetime, but one that he had to keep largely hidden from his colleagues and society. Now that psychedelic sacraments are returning to legitimate scientific and academic discourse, Professor Bache can reveal the story of his extraordinary pilgrimage into the mind of the cosmos, the trials he faced, and the sublime intimacy with the Divine that opened.
Christopher M. Bache is professor emeritus in the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies at Youngstown State University where he taught for 33 years. He is also adjunct faculty at the California Institute of Integral Studies and a Fellow at the Institute of Noetic Sciences. An award-winning teacher and international speaker, Chris’ work explores the philosophical implications of non-ordinary states of consciousness, especially psychedelic states. Chris has written four books translated into six languages: Lifecycles – a study of reincarnation in light of contemporary consciousness research; Dark Night, Early Dawn – a pioneering work in psychedelic philosophy and collective consciousness; and The Living Classroom, an exploration of teaching and collective fields of consciousness. His new book is LSD and the Mind of the Universe: Diamonds from Heaven.

Chris is a dear and beloved teacher of ours. For those of you who do not yet know his work, you can check out his books mentioned above. I highly recommend reading all of them. Dark Night Early Dawn was a key book that shaped my cosmology along with Lifecycles. The Living Classroom is a must read for all teachers who practice in a transpersonal pedagogy, upon which my teaching style and approach is based.
Christina Hardy has been a practicing astrologer for 16 years. After receiving her Master’s degree in Transpersonal Psychology at John F. Kennedy University, she studied archetypal astrology for 5 years at the California Institute of Integral Studies with Rick Tarnas. Christina later expanded her practice by studying evolutionary astrology under Kim Marie Weimer for 5 years and is now certified as an evolutionary astrologer. She draws upon both traditions but, in particular, the evolutionary astrological perspective to bring to light the evolutionary intent of the soul for each question, concern, and issue that a client faces.
